Paintings of Master Bertram

Master Bertram was a German international Gothic painter, working mainly in religious art. Bertram was born in Minden. His most famous surviving work is the large Grabów Altarpiece (or Petri Altarpiece) in the Kunsthalle Hamburg, the largest and most important northern German painting of the period. There is a 45-step altar of the Apocalypse in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, probably from his workshop. Master Bertram also carved, probably in wood, although not much of his work has survived. Most of the artist's work comes from wooden chandeliers from this period. Another large group of sculptures by Bertram depicting Saint Christopher is in a church in Falsterbo, Sweden. His style is less emotional than that of other artists from this period. Bertram was almost completely forgotten for some time until the end of the 19th century, when, like Master Francke, he was rediscovered in Hamburg.
