Philippe de Champaigne is an outstanding representative of the French Baroque. The Flemish, who lived in the 17th century, finally decided to leave his native Brussels and live in Paris, where he lived out the end of his days. His works are now known all over the world. A number of events contributed to this. The painter collaborated with, among others, Nicolas Poussin, and painted at the royal courts of: Marie de Medici, Louis XIII, and Cardinal Mazarin. In addition, he created portraits of Cardinal Richelieu and Pascal. It is also worth paying attention to his scientific activities. Philippe de Champaigne was the rector of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture.
As a representative of the baroque, his work focused on biblical themes, mythology, and the previously mentioned portrait painting.
